Tom Wheeler's "Night Interventions" Opens at the Sasse Museum of Art

PADA member Tom Wheeler has a solo exhibition, "Night Interventions," at the Sasse Museum of Art in Pomona. Wheeler is a member of the Photographic and Digital Artists group at the Palos Verdes Art Center. The show presents nighttime photographs made in the field with handheld light sources such as acrylic rods and Lucite sheets.

Each image is a long exposure made after dark. Wheeler paints with light across the landscape, often reshaping rocks, arches, and shorelines. He is quick to say he is not a landscape photographer, since his work embraces human intervention rather than treating it as an intrusion. His own body moves through the frame but disappears during the exposure, so people become part of the scene rather than apart from it.

Wheeler also used his expertise in night photography to lead a PADA light painting field shoot in October 2023. Read about it in the post "Lightpainting at Point Fermin"

The gallery, located in the basement of the Progress Building at 300 South Thomas Street, is open Friday through Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. It also hosts an Art Walk on the second Saturday, open until 9 pm, and a reception on the third Sunday from 2 to 4 pm. Congratulations to Wheeler on this solo show.
