Patrick Smyth’s Images in Peninsula Magazine

PADA member Patrick Smyth has photo credits in two recent publications covering LACMA's Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity on view through October 12 in the museum's BCAM wing.

Bondo Wyszpolski's article for the Easy Reader features several of Smyth's photographs, including the lead image of a model in a Manchu-style informal robe, a portrait of collector Chere Lai Mah, and a shot of a Shanghai-era jacket and skirt ensemble. The same reporting ran in Peninsula Magazine's July issue as "Poetry in Motion," where Smyth is credited for a photograph of a Han-style jacket, skirt, and shoes for bound feet dating to the turn of the twentieth century.

The exhibition draws largely from Chere Lai Mah's collection, more than 45 years of Chinese wardrobes spanning the late Qing Dynasty through the Cultural Revolution, now part of LACMA's permanent holdings. Smyth's photographs help capture the exhibition's meticulous staging, guest curated by Michaela Hansen with installation design by Chu-Gooding.
