Strobes and Studio Light: PADA Members Take Patrick Smyth's Lighting Class

On Sunday, August 30, members of the Photographic and Digital Artists (PADA) group of the Palos Verdes Art Center spent the afternoon learning to shape light in a studio lighting class arranged by member Patrick Smyth. The session ran from 3 to 5 pm at the studio of fellow member Reidar Schopp.

Class size was small, and Patrick focused on manual camera settings and the use of strobes. Ellen Bigelow served as the model. Attendees included Judy Herman, Reidar Schopp, Tim Truby, Rodney Boone and Jim Wimberg.

The class followed an earlier PADA lighting demonstration, and gave participants a chance to work through lighting techniques and settings themselves rather than simply watch.

Judy Herman used strobe lighting for her photographs Sea Dreams, Cave Dance, Water Dancers, Flora and Observed, while Jim Wimberg shared two untitled images. Thanks to Patrick for organizing, to Reidar for hosting, and to Ellen for modeling.
